Teaching experience
In Paris I was an in-house tutor for a private English school. I had to arrive punctually at each client’s house and create lessons that fit in with their age and experience.
I have gained a lot of valuable teaching experience working in the Middle East in both Saudi Arabia and Oman. During my time there I taught all levels of students, from true beginner to upper intermediate. The challenges that Middle Eastern students posed, forced me to reevaluate some of my teaching practices, and grow as a teacher. My experiences with DynEd CALL labs, use of original materials and positive observations, led to my promotion to coordinator in Saudi Arabia. I acted as a teacher trainer, as well as co-teacher for weaker teachers. Additionally I set up, and maintained computer based testing at two campuses. The software that is involved with this is DynEd, D2L and Question Mark.
Before I gained my CELTA, I was an English trainer for refugees and immigrants in New Zealand. This motivated me to move overseas and get my CELTA. Teaching refugees helped me develop an adaptable teaching style, as I taught a class with a wide range of abilities and varying cultural backgrounds.
I coached Fencing at Mount Pleasant Sword Club as a volunteer for a number of years. During this time I developed different methods of teaching my students to get the best results. Whilst this is different from teaching in the class, my ability to build rapport with my students, and my confidence in teaching are very useful abilities that I have which are present in both types of work.
During my time at the University of Canterbury I worked as a tutor in both a one-on-one capacity, and within the classroom to undergraduate students in both History and Mass Communication.
During my training for my CELTA certificate I taught for 6 observed hours combined. For my final observed lesson I received full marks for a one hour lesson.
Life experience
During the February earthquake in Christchurch, New Zealand, I volunteered with St John Ambulance within the cordoned off area of the city. Despite losing my job I was still able to help with supplies and logistics within the red zone. This was a very hard time for all those involved, but I feel that it has given me a more mature outlook on life, and taught me excellent management skills.
I was a volunteer Scout Leader in Christchurch with the Mount Pleasant scout group. I did this for a number of years once I turned 21. During this time I was involved in looking after and educating children from 11 to 19 years old.
